FAQ

Does verifying a PDF mean you need the original to compare against?

No. You don’t need a reference copy: structural analysis reads the evidence already inside the file you were sent — its metadata, its structure, the software behind it and its signature state.

How a verdict is possible without an original

A PDF is not a flat picture. It records how and when it was made, and some changes leave marks in that record. HTPBE? reads the record in the one file you submit and asks a single question: was this file edited after it was created? The answer does not depend on a second copy.

That is what lets HTPBE? return a verdict on a file you have never seen, from a sender you cannot reach, with no access to the issuer.

When an original still helps

  • If you do have the issuer’s copy, matching file checksums show the two files are identical.
  • If the copies differ, a comparison shows what differs. HTPBE? does not compare content and cannot say which copy is the true one.
  • A difference in the visible page that leaves no structural trace is not something one-sided analysis can detect.

What the verdict means without a comparison

Intact means no evidence of editing was found, not that the document is authentic. Inconclusive means the file’s origin can’t vouch for it. For high-stakes documents, confirm with the issuer.

Basics & Scope

Basics & Scope

No. HTPBE? verifies one thing only: whether the file was edited or forged after it was issued. It does not confirm identity, does not check a document against the issuer’s records and does not judge whether the content is true.
